Re: an interesting article ..

We're not against fasting for weight loss on this board IF, and this is a very big IF, one understands the dynamics of fasting.
It is only one component of sustained weight loss. The others are proper nutrition, exercise appropriate for your physical and mental condition, and adequate rest.
The reason we don't encourage it is because it radically changes the metabolism and for it to be sustained one must eat so little for a month to 6 weeks after breaking the fast that it's far more difficult than a severe weight loss diet. In fact in my experience it's worse than the fast itself.
If you realize that you must eat starvation rations for several weeks after a fast until your metabolism resets itself, and you're convinced you have the discipline to do it (fruits and veggies) and you have a good nutrition plan to follow when you've lost the weight and regained normal metabolic function then best of luck to you.
What we find is that people want a quick weight loss, a few days post fast discipline and then a return to the old eating habits. It becomes a yo-yo diet. The weight is gained back and is the worse for wear.
Fasts of 30 days should probably not be undertaken more than once in one's life. Certainly not more than once a decade. This is a very stressful event that would normally only occur in nature in a very severe emergency.
Repeated fasts of longer than 7-10 days, or of a frequency of more than 2-4 times a year are too stressful for the body.
So, as noted in the article above Fasting is great to cure obesity, if it's followed up with the above practices. But obesity is a life threatening medical condition. A woman whose ideal weight is 140 is not obese until she weighs 182. Like wise a 180 pound male is obese at 234.
Some medical conditions, including obesity call for prolonged therapeutic fasting. Other conditions can be approached through 1 day a week and 7-10 fast once a quarter and good nutrition, exercise and rest as a life-style. Actually this would take care of just about anybodies weight problem in 3 months.
Just remember, the discipline needed to stick to a post fast eating regimen and not regain significant weight, after a prolonged fast, is more difficult than the fast in my experience and opinion. It can be torture. I personally don't like torture. But each to his/her own.
Best to you,
