You probably are her "island of refuge" and she is just not sure how to respond correctly, and probably "shocked" out of her mind that you care about her (kind of like...how do you act in the presence of a celebrity?) She might be ONLY using you because she doesn't want to "Get too attached (like when you find a puppy that you know you're going to have to give back to it's owner), but, the issue of BEING used can be a confusing situation, the reason ANYBODY is special to someone is that they MEAN so much to that person, maybe she just doesn't know what she has to offer in return and feels UNWORTHY. You shock her, tell her what she means to you...don't just tell her, CONVINCE her so that she UNDERSTANDS completely, and then show her more attention. Don't give up on her (women don't respect that, and besides, probably everybody she knows has always done that (at least everybody she values). But if you know that you won't be able to stay together while she's in college, then make her your friend and plan to help her move and stay in touch, etc. And maybe, in the future, there will be a better relationship.
