Holier than thou Equality with God.
Phillipians 2:6 "...who, THOUGH HE WAS IN THE FORM OF GOD, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,". I was recently considering the significance of being beyond reproach (right) and the significance of conscience (we are to be able to stand before The Lord with a clear conscience and "By rejecting conscience, some have made shipwreck of THEIR [personal] faith (personal relationship)") 1 Timothy 1:19. Hebrews 9:9 seems to indicate that the objective is to "PERFECT the conscience of the worshipper". It seems as though human nature is that we all want to be better than each other and are in competiton with each other because our ego and conscience reveal to us our "less than righteous" stature (conscience is NOT perfected). We can choose the self-righteous tyranical 'temperance league' standard of righteousness to judge others by and also realize that we ourselves do not measure up and violate the code we choose to live by (poetic justice), but that we end up being bloodthirsty accusers (traitors) of the human race.
It would seem obvious to me that the whole reason God revealed Himself to the human race (instead of the animals) and we can be held accountable for our deeds, is that Adam and Eve ate of the tree of conscience, and THAT is the reason to PERFECT the conscience, as in Heb. 9:9, but human nature demands that we insist on the 'temperance league' standard of righteousness instead of God's standard of RESTING in Him (Ephesians 2:15 "...by abolishing in His flesh the law of commandments").
There used to be many pioneers of faith 100 years ago or so (Mackintosh, Spurgeon, Tozer, etc.), and the lack of spiritual visionaries today seems to point to a serious shortcoming of the modern Body of Christ. Maybe we just have to read more carefully ("I rather your goodness not be by compulsion, but of your own freewill (conscience") Philemon verse 14, and do what Jesus would have us do, instead of trying to attain the 'Blue Ribbon of goodness' that we imagine will be awarded by the 'temperance league'.
