Getting off Thyroid medication!?

I was diagnosed about 10 years ago with hypothyroidism. I had a goiter. I started taking Synthetic thyroid hormone, and the goiter went a way. I have been on the exact same dose now for 10 years, with no changes indicated, even through 2 pregnancies.
I discovered 2 years ago that hypothyroidism and gluten intolerance are often related. I have also had IBS for about 20 years. So I went on a gluten free diet and VOILA, no more IBS at all.
Now I want to know if anyone has ever successfully gotten off of synthetic thyroid hormones. my thyroid levels, on the medication, are right where they should be. But since it has been so consistent for so many years, it makes me wonder if my body, now healthier, might be ready to compensate on it's own without the hormones... any opinions?
