As much of the world now knows, there is a huge drugging scandal overtaking the sports community.

I'm not here (in this article) to offer opinions on steroid use and chemical enhancement of athletic performance.

I will say there appears to be a lot of careless word slinging going on. All sorts of diverse substances athletes are taking are being labeled steroids, when that may or may not be the case. You have to list all the substances and check up on what exactly they are.

These athletes are, for example, using so-called MASKING AGENTS, which make the required tests for illegal substances read clean and negative. You take, say, an illegal steroid plus a masking agent, and when the testers come around from Major League Baseball, your test indicates you are steroid-free.

Okay. Now here is a snip from a current Dave Zirin column posted at Common Dreams. It concerns Jason Giambi, a NY Yankee player who spent most of the 2004 season on the disabled list. Giambi's very recent grand jury testimony in the BALCO case has been leaked to the press, and if we are to believe these leaks, he has admitted to steroid and masking agent use:

"Giambi in particular took grand jurors down a harrowing rabbit hole of steroid use during his 2001-2003 seasons. He testified to injecting human growth hormones in his stomach and testosterone into his buttocks. Giambi in addition rubbed an undetectable steroid knows as ``the cream'' on his body and placed drops of another, called ``the clear,'' under his tongue. He also admitted ingesting a Female Fertility Drug called Clomid, which some medical experts say can exacerbate a pituitary tumor. Giambi suffers from such a tumor. His revelations occur in the wake of the drug related death of 1997 National League MVP Ken Caminiti who admitted to steroid use and a horror show of health problems in the months before he died."

Giambi used CLOMID. Why? A number of sources list CLOMID as a masking agent athletes are employing to test clean for steroids.

I was amazed when I found this out, because in 1996, when I started something called The Great Boycott---against eight gigantic chemical/pharmaceutical companies---I had used CLOMID as an example of a drug that Dow produced and sold. Only a depraved and criminal mind would have allowed such a drug on the market.

Here is what I wrote about CLOMID in 1996:

"Nothing could prepare a sane person for the PDR's [Physician's Desk Reference] description of Dow's Clomid, a drug that attempts to produce ovulatory stimulation so that pregnancy can occur in women for whom that would otherwise be unlikely.
"Here is a partial list of Clomid's post-marketing adverse effects:
seizure
stroke
psychosis
cataracts
posterior vitreous detachment
arrhythmia
tachycardia
hepatitis
liver and breast and pituitary and ovarian and kidney and tongue and bladder cancer
brain abscess
tubal pregnancy
uterine hemorrhage
ovarian hemorrhage
In the babies born to the mothers taking Clomid, there have occurred:
neuroectodermal tumor
thyroid tumor
leukemia
abnormal bone development including skeletal malformations of the skull, face, nasal passages, jaw, hand, limb and foot joints
malformations of the anus, eye, lens, ear, lung, heart and genitalia
dwarfism
deafness
mental retardation
chromosomal disorders
neural tube defects."

Note that pituitary cancer is on the list. Zirin states Giambi has a pituitary tumor.

So...we have athletes all over the world using CLOMID as a masking agent.

How many of them are now suffering from, or will suffer from, one or more of the effects of this drug?

How many of the women athletes who will become pregnant (or have already become pregnant and have given birth), will view one or more of CLOMID'S effects in their babies?

Recently, as a result of the FDA scandals involving Chiron and Vioxx, and the ensuing fallout and revelations, we have seen another Pandora's box break wide open. For years and years, the FDA has been turning a blind eye to both the pre-marketing and post-marketing dire effects of the drugs they've been approving as SAFE and EFFECTIVE. The FDA, of course, orginally approved CLOMID for public use, and they now stand in line for criminal blame in this major horror story that is unfolding.

The public, by and large, stands mute and dumb before all these facts. People simply can't comprehend how the FDA would allow a drug with all those crushing adverse effects to come on the market.

But there it is. It happened. It's real. And a devastating price is being paid.
