Re: I had my baby.......this is hard!

Nicole, well done! I was wondering how you were. Sometimes breastfeeding takes some getting used to. I perservered and I'm glad I did, but it was painful and difficult at first. My midwife suggested that I expressed milk so that my husband could feed once in the night, it worked well for us in a way. I got a bit extra sleep, but at the next feed I would literally be squirting everywhere! One thing that I learnt is that the first few minutes of a feed are of a weaker, more thirst quenching milk, and then after that comes richer more satisfying milk. The knack is to try and get your baby to have both, before he finishes with another drink of the other side. However, you may be advised to do it differently. I nursed three babies, and they all fed differently. My son (first) was the hungriest, and I was worried about him getting enough, but he put on 1 pound a week on average, so he obviously was.

The spots on your baby sound like milk spots, which are very common. Its all to do with the sweat glands, and heat, and usually go after a couple of weeks. If you feel he is too hot, maybe have him in fewer layers in the day, and do not wrap him up too warmly.

My son also did his business before he was born, and needed to be suctioned. I think he was in a hurry to get out.

He would also grizzle in the evening, and want to feed on and off. In fact, I think I gave him colic, as he needed one proper feed, instead of lots of 'first milk' feeds. It gets easier though.

Well done again, try to rest when your son does (at least some of the time). And if anyone offers help of any kind, say yes!

I had trouble with this at first, but soon learnt that it does make things a lot easier, and people are so glad to be able to help.
