Re: Does Candida prefer an Acidic or Alkaline environment in the gut?

I hope I can add some light to this - I am taking S. Boulardii at the moment which is one of the ingredients in 3lac, and works similarly. Basically no-one knows *exactly* how it works, but it works to displace pathogenic yeasts/bacteria in the gut. It is very agressive. The only problem is that these things are not natural inhabitants of the gut and are quickly eliminated within a week or so (by normal bowel flora) if supplementation is stopped.

In my case I got some candida in my stools and could feel my bloating go down a lot as well as my other symptoms. Now candida didn't show up in my great smokies stools test, and 5 months of bowel cleansing didn't turn up anything, yet this good yeast S. Boulardii was able to do this within a few days.

So then why not just displace all the candida? Well you could in theory, but for a start you would have to take an absolutely huge dosage. To the extent that I've read of experiements conducted in mice where S. Boulardii was fed to candida carrying mouse in doses which no human could ever consume. Even then, whilst drastically reducing the candida, some still remained which would come back when supplementation stopped.

At the moment I am taking up to 10 times the recommended dosage. The more you take the larger the population established in the gut, and the more candida is displaced. But I am under no dellusions about this being a cure. It is not. The candida quickly adapts.

So why take it then? Well firstly it acts as a stop-gap - relieving symptoms so that your body can get on with healing. Now Derrek - this doesn't seem to be happening in your case with 3lac, so why continue taking it?
Another reason for taking S. Boulardii is that it increases the body's natural resistance to fungus - i.e. its Secretory Immunogloblin A count (sIga). The body has been fighting candida so long that it fails to recognize it as an outside invader. Now this other yeast comes along, and the body does recognize it as an invader and starts mounting a defence. Mcuh of this defence is generalised and will work against other pathogens such as candida.

For this reason S. Boulardii (and I suspect 3lac) should not be taken for long periods because the body will adapt to it thus reducing one of the core reasons for taking it.

Such agressive displacement bacteria/yeasts have a place in a candida healing programme, but only when used wisely. In themselves they cure nothing.
