I have a few things to add. Just because you are not "active" doesn't mean you souldn't get a check-up. Really, going to a Gyno has very little to do with your sexual health. It has everything to do with your own state of health, ie: uterine and ovarian cancers and other female health issues.
For the initial commentor, 7 years is too long, especially if you are having pain. I also had an aweful experience when I was in college and even after. I was lucky enough to find a homeopath and acupuncturist who is just wonderful and very gentle. Shop around. Meet with them first to discuss some of the issues you've had in the past, build a raport with them and they with you. A really good gyno will definetly understand. Find a woman gyno, chances are she's had a bad experience too.
Good Luck
