Re: ADD linked to Sleep Problems

I am a school psychologist and have read recently that sleep problems may be a cause of ADD/ADHD due to insufficient amounts of time spent in a particular phase of sleep (can't remember which, have to look it up again). The idea being that the brain needs to spend a certain amount of time making a particular wave in order to promote proper development, and if it doesn't get that amount of time, the brain development actually slows. One of the hypotheses is that CRT screens (computer, video game, or TV) can cause this if the child logs too much CRT time, or falls asleep in front of it, and/or if it's left on all night (some parents even leave the TV on in the room as a nightlight, I can hardly believe this).

Recent research has shown that practice of transcendental meditation causes the same increase in attention as as medication in ADHD diagnosed students. Brain studies, PET scans mostly, have shown that chemical changes take place in the brain both during sleep, different during different phases, and during meditation. So the results of the meditation study would be consistent with the sleep-difficulty hypothesis.

I would NEVER allow a child to have a TV or computer in their bedrooms, and I would not allow my community, or my child's classmates, to dictate what goes on in my home. I realize that many families are television and video addicted, and that changes of this sort would cause great discord, but it is important for us to know that our culture is causing these problems with our children, and that this is a big part of our culture.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has been saying that TV is not good for babies or children for decades. We really should be listening.

Sorry to rant. :-)
