I remember being totally repulsed the first time I cooked grown in the garden broccoli and saw dozens of little worms float to the top. My hillbilly grandma just skimmed them off and said that proved they were organic. It took me awhile to be able to eat broccoli again. Here in the country, people aren't as touchy about critters in their food. When I got upset about seeing a frog in the spring where we got our drinking water, the neighbor who was repairing the pump just spit (fortunately not in the water) and said "shoot fire, water ain't fit to drink lessn' somethins peed in it". I think that's when I got hooked on Coke.
On a more serious note, my doctor told me one reason vegetarians in India have less of a problem with vitamin B-12 deficiency than American vegetarians is because they consume enough insect parts in their grains and veggies to provide adequate amounts of the essential vitamin.
