Your strength of conviction in remaining genuinely interested in Christianity is uncommon. I am almost 50 years old, so my point of view may not be "common", but I have been a Christian for 17 years and think that the "altruistic" (practical) view of God may be helpful to you. God [the father] is the Creator and saw that (after the fall in the Garden of Eden), the human race would not be able to return to Him in heaven, so He sent His Son to, in EFFECT, purify us so that we would be able to return to Him. We are not really PURIFIED so that we are ACTUALLY perfect, we only become "new creations" (born again) so that our imperfections will not keep us from going to heaven (that's why we use the term "salvation" instead). After Jesus died on the cross as the sacrifice for sin, and before He rose into heaven to sit at the right hand of the father, He left us "The Holy Spirit" to teach us how to love each other properly and genuinely care for the welfare of our fellow human being. The third book of the bible was written for the only priesthood that was ever sanctioned by God. That priesthood was given the authority to forgive sin by performing certain rituals that were outlined in the book of LEVITICUS, but, when Jesus Christ came to earth and died on the cross, He abolished the priesthood and He is now the ONLY forgiveness of sin. Many people don't understand that the Levitical priesthood was made obsolete, so they join a religion, but God is not a "religion"(there ARE "Denominations" that have different methods of teaching spiritual growth, but don't believe in priests to be able to do what ONLY Jesus can, and those "denominations" are not religious).

There are many churches that worship God in truth and spirit, but they do not have have priests, they have PASTORS who will lead the worship service (but still CANNOT FORGIVE SIN, ONLY Jesus can do that). There are no scapulas or rosary beads necessary to pray to God, only a contrite and gentle heart. Christianity is not simply a "faith" to be chosen (like a political affiliation), and cannot ONLY be seen as "protection from hell", it requires genuine love (caring) for your fellow human being (you've been exposed to it as a "faith", now learn it as a "LOVE".
