Re: Grinding teeth/braces?

I STILL wear retainers. The orthodontist told me it was no longer necessary after a year or two, but I was like I still want to wear them. No shifting, no sir! Only at night, mind you. It has been about 10 years now since I had them off, still wear them. Actually, I had the top one replaced once after I broke it. Then three years ago my dentist pointed out that I clench my teeth at night and it causes stress fractures. He made me a night guard that is molded to my mouth that I wear now on the top. Had that replaced earlier this year. The bottom retainer is still the same one. (Amazing, huh?)

I know why I clench my teeth. I used to sleep with my mouth open but then when I quit eating dairy and started drinking green tea, my sinuses/allergies cleared up so I could breathe through my nose. I wanted to breathe through my nose at night instead of mouth so I consciously had to keep my mouth closed. So it's not the same as grinding, but still, not the greatest. Doesn't really matter with the mouth guard, though.

My friend had braces for two years. Got them off, dentist of course gave him a retainer. It was summer. He left his retainer in the car in the direct sun and it melted that same day that he got it. By the time he could get another retainer (1 week) his teeth had already shifted SO MUCH that you couldn't tell he had ever had braces. Now his teeth look pretty rough, really crooked.

Retainers are KEY. I have other stories, but that is enough. After you go to the trouble of aligning your teeth, make sure they stay aligned. After the initial year or two of daily retainers, at least wear your retainers at night once a week. Make sure they still fit. If they start to get tight, wear them every night for a while.
