Depending on the location and size, it might be reasonable to use a drill to smooth out the chip, taking off the rough edges. I had that done to the bottom of one of my front teeth when it was very rough, didn't take even 5 minutes, required no medication, didn't hurt. I couldn't see the difference but I could feel it! I think the drill was a diamond or something?
