APPETITE SLUMP & HOMOEOPATHY

WHY IS THIS LACK OF APPETITE
COMMON CAUSES & WHAT TO DO
CAUSES FOR CONCERN
WHAT CAN HOMOEOPATHY DO
COMMON REMEDIES FOR APPETITE

“If you love me, you will complete what I have served you” says the mother to her ever pampered child. A mother’s day is made if she succeeds in feeding the extra morsel to her child. Well with so many advertisements about a fancy snack that the child is bombarded with through the media and notwithstanding the peer pressure at school, children give in to eating all kinds and finding no appetite for the well nutritioned meal that her mother has prepared with a twinkle in her eye. There ensues a ‘mother of all battles’ as the child is coaxed into eating the regular meal.

WHY IS THIS LACK OF APPETITE

By the age of one year the child’s weight would triple since the time she was born. So during the first two years of life the growth is phenomenal and to meet the requirements the ‘appetite center’ in the brain is all willing to eat. But between the second to sixth year of life there is a sulmp in the growth and thereby the demands are limited. But a mother would have none of it as she refuses to let the child away without eating and the forced feeding also contributes to decrease in appetite.

But due to certain conditions too the appetite goes awry like sore throat, vomiting, diarrhoea, earache, fever, heat of summer etc. which need to be properly treated and the appetite would return.

COMMON CAUSES & WHAT TO DO

  • As a child’s brain is aware of how much to eat there is no point in forcing the child and the mother’s time is better spent in preparing a well-nutritioned meal.
  • Allowing high-caloried snacks like potato chips, popcorn will reduce the appetite. A snack should be equidistant between two big meals of the day and not more than 20% of the child’s meal.
  • Whole fruit is for children and juices are for older years. Frequent juice intake will also reduce the appetite.
  • Encourage the child to eat finger foods or foods she can easily pick up and eat from the plate, don’t insist that you feed her.
  • Small servings in a plate give the child a sense of accomplishment on eating and she would come back for more.
  • Extending meal-time for forcing the child for a longer time will her feel an unpleasantness about the act of eating.
  • After all this also don’t forget that missing a meal occasionally is harmless and at sometimes the child comes back hungry for more.

CAUSES FOR CONCERN

If the child has not put on weight for six months to an year, has lost weight, attacks of loose motions, vomiting at regular intervals, episodes of cold and cough need to be addressed immediately.

WHAT CAN HOMOEOPATHY DO

Homoeopathy has good remedies to address the causes of slump in appetite. Diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, earache, abdominal pain, worms, recurrent episodes of cold and cough, summer heat are easily treated by Homoeopathy and your child would gain back the appetite in no time.

Homoeopathy would also help in proper assimilation of vital nutrients and vitamins and in cases of improper absorption it will be corrected too.

COMMON REMEDIES FOR APPETITE

ANTIMONIUM CRUDUM is prescribed for children who have vomiting, lack of appetite during summer.
CINCHONA OFF will improve the digestive capacity of the child and thereby appetite.
CINA gets rid of the ‘worms’ in a child and improves appetite.
LYCOPODIUM improves the appetite of children who feel satiated after eating a little.
PULSATILLA will get rid of the regular attacks of cold and improve appetite.
