Breakfast or no?

I keep hearing that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and that eating in the morning speeds up your metabolism for the remainder of the day. However, I am also hearing that you shouldn't eat breakfast because your body is in 'cleansing mode' for several hours after you get up. The latter sounds silly to me, since your body stays in cleansing mode up until the moment you eat something again. I am considering having a fruit breakfast in the morning and then fasting until the next morning, but i wonder if anyone else has thoughts on the breakfast vs. no breakfast dilemma.
