Metal fillings and teeth grinding

I'm new to this subject, but am desperately looking for answers. There's just too much to read about, and I can't possibly understand it all! ;)

I'm 30 years old and I'm interested in having all my metal fillings replaced in order to improve my health (I have 2 large and 2 small fillings). The 2 large ones (my back molars) take up most of the 2 teeth, and I don't have much tooth left in there.

I've suffered with many ailments in my short life (tension headaches for 15 years, neck/shoulder pain, and numerous other "mystery" problems). Also, I've had terrible tooth pain (where the 2 large fillings are) off and on, despite numerous x-rays that show there's nothing wrong.

I've inquired to my "regular" dentist about replacing the fillings, but he indicated that since I grind my teeth at night (really bad), metal is the only way to go (apparently, porcelain or other types wouldn't be as durable).

I also had braces for 3.5 years as an adult, so I'm certain that getting rid of all the metal toxicity would help. I just don't know where to start.

So here are some of my specific questions:
* What should I look for in choosing a dentist?
* Does anyone else grind their teeth, and has it been a problem for you?
* What's involved in the proceedure? Preperation, time, side effects...
* What should I expect to pay for something like this?
* And finally, what happens afterwards? Do I have to detox somehow?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

- Lynn
