Back Pain

Does anyone have any ideas on what could cause sudden onset of chronic low back pain? It's been about six or eight weeks and it is staying. It is at the base of the back just above the tail bone below the waist. It feels like a dry brittle flat piece of old bone is there and will break if I move suddenly.
