polymyalgia rhuematica (pmr)

Has anyone had any dealings with curing pmr? My mother, who is 80, and has osteoperosis is in a great deal of pain. She cannot take prednisone because of the osteoperosis. Her doctor put her on prednisone anyway and she broke a vertabrae in her lower back.
Is there anything she can do to rid herself of this crippling disease? Please help.
