it's quite normal to have an increased need for calories around our periods because our metabolism speeds up. Lots of things happen in the body to prepare for a safe menstruation. I eat like a pig sometimes! but I don't worry about it because it all gets burned up. So long as I'm careful to eat REAL foods like a huge salad, it never ends up on my hips. :)
When you have cravings for sweets that are temporary, they mean an increased need for protein and oils. So rather than give in and get sugar, eat some good fish, eggs, liver, lentils, nuts. Salt is also quite helpful at that point. You can have a pretty low-salt diet the rest of the time, but when Sugar cravings hit that's when it's a good idea to use it liberally on your foods because the adrenals need it and salt helps the body burn carbs better. When the body cannot burn carbs properly you get very intense Sugar cravings.
A nice compromise if you allow yourself sweets is to eat honey roasted almonds or fruit and nut bars.
