The word mutation is used in a very specific sense genetically - it refers to spontanoues, random mistakes in the genetic copying process. These mistakes are very rare, but they do happen from time to time. What you get is invariably a degredation in the organism.

None of the mechanims described in that article refer to (or rely on) genetic mutation, rather the mechanisms described all rely on the sharing of existing genetic information (bacterial equivalent of sex!).

The reason I mentioned evolution at all was because of another forum where someone had used bacteria becoming resistant to Antibiotics as a supposed example of evolution. It isn't. It is just biology.
