Just to back up Shelleys excellent replys, the estrogenic effects of flax seeds actually have a purpose - they help in the utilisation and conversion of the Omega 3 oils into Prostaglandins. This is why men need more Omega 3 than women, because women (by virtue of estrogen) are much better converters. Also women on the pill are even better at converting Omega 3's.
The Science for all of this can be found at Udo Erasmus's site.
So my advice would be that ground flax be consumed as well as the oil.
In any case flax seeds have a tremendously positive impact on the bowels. This is not just another form of fibre.
