Insulin Resistance and Syndrome X are the same thing, the X is just referring to the many other complications that can arise from IR.

Hypoglycemia can be IR but it can be something else - insulin works okay or works TOO well, so that you get low blood glucose levels for too long because the liver is not able to replace them quickly. So you get sleepy.

IR is the body's way of compensating for a diet very high in simple sugars without the balancing effects of protein and oils, just like hypoglycemia, but may have little to do with the liver. It may have more to do with lack of EFA's.

Since the body cannot change what you choose to eat, it simply chooses to ignore what's floating around, not let it get into cells, by shutting the gateway for insulin. Cells really do like to starve every now and again. :)
