Evolution Happens
Why won’t evolutionists enter into a strictly scientific, written debate on the creation-evolution issue?
I think this question epitomizes the false claim made by creationists, that their position is a scientifically valid one. Therefore, I will attempt to provide as complete an answer to this question as possible. I will also explain why creationism is anything but “scientific”.
Although many evolutionists participate in written debates with creationists, there are a number of very good reasons why many evolutionists choose not to get involved in this so called “scientific” debate.
REASON 1
Creationism is not scientific, because the creationist position is based on a commitment to a set of beliefs first and foremost. Unlike scientific explanations, the creationist position was not arrived at as a result of the application of scientific methodologies, such as observation and experimentation. After all, a thousand years ago, a large percentage of the worlds population believed that life originated as described in the Genesis story in the Bible. This is the same Genesis story which forms the basis of what most creationists believe today, in regards to the origin and history of life on Earth. The research conducted by creationists and creationist organizations, is primarily intended to discredit evolutionary biology and
Science in general, in the minds of as many people as possible. The purpose of the research conducted by creationists, is not to try to learn about the origin and history of life on Earth. After all, they already “know” what happened. The Bible tells them what happened. They just need to try to convince others of what they already “know” to be true. For many creationists, this goal of convincing others of the validity of a strict and literal interpretation of the Bible is of utmost importance. This is because, these creationists believe that those who do not share their beliefs will end up in hell and it is their duty to save as many souls from this fate as possible.
