It seems peppermint is man created from mixing spearmint with river mint.
River Mint looks just like Peppermint and grows wild along / near running water---it does not seem to grow around ponds or standing water.
So that suggest spearmint is "real".
Surprisingly 1 farm in the USA makes 75% of the world's peppermint. They harvest it just like hay for sledge in special wagons made of metal---these wagons are blown full of chopped peppermint, bugs, weeds and all and steam pipes hooked to the wagons and they say the peppermint comes out within 12 minutes
...which is amazing and dirty---but 1 farmer does it for the world for the past 50 years......it is used to flavor tooth paste, mouth wash, etc.
Spearmint and Applemint seem to be the 2 real wild / natural mints that stand up against time.. both are milder than peppermint. Peppermint is harvested 1x per year.
