Oil of Oregano Proves Effective Against Coronavirus
Our article briefly described a preliminary in vitro experiment assessing the impact of carvacrol-rich oregano oil alone, or in combination with other monoterpene-rich herb oils, on the proliferation of coronavirus in human cell cultures. This pathogen was in the news back in 2003, because it was identified as the trigger for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
The investigator, a DVM, PhD, concluded that oregano oil can inhibit proliferation of coronavirus and reduce viral titers. However, he states clearly–as do we in our article–that this is early stage basic research, and that we would need an actual human trial before drawing any firm conclusion about the clinical role of oregano oil for coronavirus infection.
A number of preliminary in vitro or animal studies have shown that compounds in oregano oil are virustatic and virucidal against several viral pathogens. There are plausible mechanisms of action. We should not rule out oregano oil simply because it is derived from an herb.
Oil of oregano may prove to be a valuable ally against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
ü A recent in vitro study indicates that the essential oil of this medicinal herb can destroy human coronavirus, thought to be the pathogen responsible for SARS, and completely stop its replication within 20 minutes of exposure.
The study was conducted by a Microbiotest, an independent microbiological testing lab. They incubated human coronavirus in MRC-5 cell lines with a combination of olive oil, wild oregano, wild sage, wild cumin and wild cinnamon oils. The oregano oil alone reduced viral titers from over 5 million particles per ml at baseline, to 167 particles per ml within 15 minutes. At 20 minutes, the titers were down to 150 particles per ml. The Oregano / olive oil, sage, cumin, cinnamon combination reduced titers from over 5 million, to 133 particles per ml in 15 minutes. Within 20 minutes, they were reduced to non-detectable levels. The investigators noted that both preparations were able to halt viral replication within the host cells.
The in vitro findings need to be confirmed in human clinical trials, but they are compelling in that they show that oil of oregano, alone and in combination with other essential oils, have unequivocal virucidal and virustatic effects.
From a Master Herbalist:
The above Internet article is 1 of many over the past 20+ years about the usefulness of Wild Oregano Essential Oil. With 20 years experience I believe True Wild Oregano Oil is far better than anything that has ever been written about Essential Oil of Oregano for this 1 amazing fact: the above study used a “commercial” oregano product that is actually 11 parts olive oil and 1 part oregano oil. This highly diluted oregano is sold as “super strength” oregano oil and 20 years ago sold for $74.95 per ounce. The source comes from Turkey commercial farm which once oregano oil became world known, turned to making synthetic oregano oil produced in labs. Once any essential oil is made world known and has a market, they must make a synthetic product, because most essential oils require at least 50 pounds of herbs to make 1 ounce of oil. David Christopher of the school of natural healing 20 years ago believed that if you purchase an essential oil in North America, that the odds are it is a synthetic and not the real plant.
People wonder why most all essential oil books all say that essential oils are for external use only? The reason is, most essential oils are synthetic and not made from herbs. While “True” essential oils, must always be made by steam distilling the herbs and collection of the oil and nothing more. The commercial facilities besides making synthetics will also use acids and gases to produce cheap essential oil products.
Long ago, the world’s largest pharmaceutical company collected all medical herbs worldwide and transplanted them at the correct altitude and climate, using thousands and thousands of acres of land and mountains. They also collected wild oregano plants and have been growing the original plants for many years. They produce most all of the world’s True Steam Distilled Essential Oils and consider the creation of synthetics and drugs as a sin against nature. Below is a picture they took for me, of their Wild Oregano Plants.
You can only imagine that when you use 100% True Oregano Oil and not a commercial product that is 90% olive oil, that the results are far more amazing than any article ever produced on the internet. I have always suggested 1 drop daily for lifelong prevention and 1 drop per hour for treatment and have used this essential oil for every mammal, bird, and even plants for every situation.
We to make a diluted oregano blend with sunflower oil for those that like the so called “super strength” for $16 and not the $74.95 per ounce sold 20 years ago. One ounce of Pure is $50. If you take 1 ounce of pure and 11 ounces of Olive Oil, you would have 12 ounces of the commercial produce that was used in the medical experiments that retailed for 12 x $74.95 = $899.40. True mountain grown wild oregano is superior in every way to commercial field grown in Turkey, that is also likely today to be a synthetic that floods the internet markets.
Many rare herbs grow on mountain sides, desert parsley is another example, it likes to be high on the mountain sides and will not grow below a certain altitude. Desert parsley was used by Dr. Krebs as a treatment / cure for the 1917 swine flu epidemic. The world’s largest pharmaceutical grade herb company studied all of the herbs of the world long ago and recreated (transplanted) the proper environments for the trees and herbs. Today they make over 70 different freeze dried fruit juices and over 3,000 different herbs.
All of the essential oil books leave out the most famous essential oils medical was using 100+ years ago on purpose; they are the most famous anti-parasite essential oils. By 1930 medical / zoos were using these essential oils to treat all mammals worldwide. When medical eliminated herbal use, all these herbs and essential oils were discarded and deliberately removed. This is why I suggest the best herbal history was written pre 1950.
