Flavors and nutrients trigger hunger, yes. It's the same if you're on a fruit and vegetable (live foods) fast, the best thing to do is simply to not have the triggers (the tempters) around you.
I learned from Mighty.Sun.Tzu 's posts about good fasting practices, and from 'The Fasting Connection' website. The guidelines were to go on fresh fruits and veg (uncooked) until your body tells you it's no longer hungry (appetite goes low at each meal). That's the signal that tells you that your body has gathered the nutrients it needs to start the repair processes.
I've always used my tap water, but I live in a location where chlorine and flouride are not added to the water supply.
If anything I suggest embarking on short fasts (weekend, 3-4 day types) to build up good confidence. Water and dry fasting are practiced in places where there has never been such a thing as a britta filter, after all, and for some reason, it works. ;-)
