Hyper-infection is often complicated by bacterial and fungal infection,1,3,6,11 because of the leakage of gut flora from a damaged bowel by moving larvae. Enteric bacteria are also carried by invasive larvae in their outer surfaces. This can result in septicemia, pneumonia, meningitis and disseminated bacterial or fungal infection in many parts of the body,1,11 massive secondary bacterial infections are frequently the immediate cause of death in patients with hyper-infection syndrome.
