Re: Do people who have never heard the gospel go to hell?
"I really believe your interpretation of these scriptures is being effected by the cult you were once in."
I've been mulling this over since yesterday. lol
And I came to the conclusion, since I've heard this countless times on here, that it's not a good idea to ever be honest with someone about your past, if you've been in any kind of cult, because then whatever disagreements you have, before the other party will even try to understand your position, they will try to shut you down with this, saying you were in a cult and probably still are. :)
When the truth is, in my case at least, I left the cult I was in decades ago and have no desire to go back. And I have no reason to hold onto untruth from there for any reason. If there is any agreement I do have with them at all, it's because I find it biblical. We've all said before that Satan mixes lies with truth. False religions, cults, etc. can still have some truths. Right?
I found this quote below on the Rethinking Hell website. They get that same objection, that what they believe about hell, comes from false religions or cults, etc. all the time, even when many, or most, or maybe all the contributors to that site have not been in cults.
People will say, "Annihilationism is an error of the Jehovah Witnesses, etc."
Their answer:
"If our view of hell is an error, it will not be on account of who believes it. That ignores the primacy of the Bible in addition to demonstrating the genetic and association fallacies. Jehovah’s Witnesses also believe in God and the inerrancy of the Bible. By the same logic, these beliefs would be in error. Moreover, the traditional view of hell is believed by both Mormons and Muslims. Obviously we shouldn't conclude from this that the traditional view of hell is false."
