I was a tanning bed user for 30 years. About 7 years ago, a dermatologist removed a suspicious speck of skin on my stomach. It turned out to be nothing and I got left with an ugly scar. She scared me out of my tanning bed, but I'm left with trying to find a way to get a tan. My skin is terrible (and yes I know it could be worse if I get cancer). I am very scared about using a tanning bed again, maybe just from the media hype that it is now considered a carcinogen, like my gas grill I guess:). So, for the past 7 years I'm outside catching rays on occasion, which I feel has created more sun damage to my skin than I had from tanning in a bed for 30! I am in my 40's now. Maybe it's catching up with me, but I keep finding new spots when I'm out in the sun! Don't have any wrinkles, just sun spots. So I'm left with deciding if somehow slathering on chemicals to get a tan is really safer than spending 20 minutes 2x per week in a low pressure tanning bed. I don't like the idea of getting more sun spots, but honestly I can't say I had these ugly things before being out in the sun. What do you think is worse? Tanning bed or self tanner?
