I initially had periods of fatigue that I can only decsribe as my eyes were so tired they want to shut but there is a motor or nervous vibrating energy in my stomach and legs that wants me to keep moving.
Licorice root didn't work for me b/c it was overstimulatiing. It worked ok for about 2weeks and then went downhill from there. I attribute this to the fact that when you are sympathetic dominant (b/c of low functioning adrenals) that your nerves can still get your tired adrenals to produce some cortisol. So your cortisol will go up and licorice root will make it worse b/c it's slowing down the breakdown of that cortisol.
Plus licorice is known to drop potassium. If you follow nutritional balancing, then you know potassium is associated with cortisol. By month 3 on licorice root, I started to get heart palps, more anxious, near panic attacks and this weird thumping on the sides of my neck when under stress. It was like my body was trying very hard to pump blood to my brain.
My dr agrees that if you give your body energy it will stop compensating for it in these other ways. But at the same time you and me need calming formulas. I decided to add a pharmacutical to the mix b/c plain old valerian and chamomile tea are not strong enough. I want something to knock me out at night so I get a good night sleep and maybe that will help take some of the edge off.
I was given an antiepileptic drug but may request another one that a friend tried. It's meant for bi-polar patients but acts like a tranquilizer and will give you 8-10 solid hours of sleep.
It's not the falling asleep on my own, I had hoped for but at least it's sleep and maybe keep me asleep thru the night.
