Hi thanks for your questions.
No...sorry for being intentionally vague: They can Live(survive) if away from your body, but they cannot function...being a dehydrated dust speck is not functional...but they can sporulate, the individual or her (dna) progeny will survive till they hit another warm moist body. Your foot, your dog's nose, your eye.

Sporulation can happen in your clothes drawer, from a speck of infected skin. Thus, your second question answers your first.

And no, we do not have a way of dealing with it.
