Re: Depressed and lonely

I'm glad you had the courage to post a message about your problem. It shows you are reaching out to others, which is a good first step toward change.

It sounds like you know what the problem is: your family is dysfunctional and being around them has damaged your sense of self worth. Yet knowing this in your mind is not enough to change things. After 25 years you have become accustomed to your family and the role that you play: even though it would seem crazy to someone on the outside, it seems normal to you. That's why you need to find a good counselor who is on the "outside" looking in, who can give you some perspective on how you and your family relate to each other and support you in breaking away and beginning your own life. We absolutely accept the world we are presented with, even if its crazy or dangerous to us. It will take time to learn to accept a new world, one where you have a healthy relationship with yourself and (if possible) your family, but with a good counselor who supports you and believes in you, you can do it. Good luck!

David
