Its simply a fact of physiology that fasting and very low calorie diets slow down the metabolic rate. However, you may also find that among the benefits of fasting and cleansing are you can utilize the food you do eat better so you can get more nourishment from less food; and you will gain the will power to stop emotional and binge eating. I have read that deep breathing exercises can help keep up your metabolic rate (check out Yoga sites for instructions), also gentle exercise like walking or rebounding can help keep up the rate calories are burned without overtaxing a fasting body.
