I smoked for 35 years and I stopped and I'm still not smoking.
My method? Cold turkey. I chose not to replace one addiction with another (e-cigs, patches, nicotine gum, etc.). And, the physical withdrawal lasted about 7 days. I was irritable, anxious, and experienced sleep issues......and, all of the other withdrawal symptoms.
After the physical withdrawal symptoms passed, it's been the psychological triggers that I've been working on managing.
Giving up (or, ending) anything that once held importance is perceived as a personal loss, so it's great to have group support and encouragement.
I did it without anything - just cold turkey. For me, that was the only way to stop.
