Trouble with bromism – any more ways to detox?

I hope this is the right forum to post on.

I’ve been doing halide detox for about 3 months now. I sort of stumbled across it by accident – I ate some nori, and felt incredibly sick and my hair started falling out. Looked it up – discovered bromide!

I’ve only been taking a tiny about of iodine, and no Lugol’s or iodoral, just from a piece of nori – about 1 mcg of Iodine every other day. I’ve been getting a ton of bromide out and some fluoride. (Hope that doesn’t seem too weird, from so little iodine!) I’ve read that some people who’ve been dosed with bromide are very sensitive and have to start the detox very, very slowly (would seem I’m in that category, if that’s true). I believe I was dosed with bromide for many years from asthma medicines, and there’s never been a point in my life (including childhood) when I got a significant amount of iodine. For the last several years I’ve been getting absolutely none in my diet, so I’m assuming I’m extremely deficient. I would love to take more Iodine but when I try, the detox gets much worse (it’s barely manageable now).

I’m also assuming I’m hypothyroid, as when I go off the tiny amount of Iodine I’m taking for more than two days, I feel like I’m “shutting down” and just feel really bad, then start to perk up after taking the iodine. I don’t have goiter or any physical signs of problems with my thyroid, however (that I’m aware of) including the thinning of the lower eyelashes, eyebrow shape, etc. I also don’t have any symptoms of hypothyroidism that aren’t also attributable to bromide.

My bromide detox symptoms are, so far:
Hair falling out (ahhh!)
Completely wrecked digestive system – almost everything makes me sick to my stomach, even with the help of probiotics and digestive enzymes
Throwing up to the point of dry-heaving
Diarrhea
Difficulty digesting fats and proteins
Dysphagia, now to the point of often gagging when I swallow
Swollen submaxillary lymph nodes
Skin break-outs
Prolonged, somewhat off-schedule, and very painful periods, accompanied by arthritis-like feelings in my hips especially, and some in my knees and ankles
Sores in the mouth, and raw mouth
A peculiar white calcified patch in the middle of my tongue (haven’t been able to find any information on this) that showed up after I started getting some fluoride detox symptoms, which is pretty much impossible to get off entirely, and when I get bits of it off, it takes the skin of my tongue underneath with it!
A metallic taste in the back of my throat sometimes, usually while doing salt loadings
A few instances of liver pain (before I started working to detox my liver to help with the bromism)
Headache feeling like it’s leading to migraine (though no actual migraines)
VERY strong, distinct urine odor when successfully detoxing (and the same smell sometimes in #2)
Feeling “out of it”
Easily dehydrated
Sweat leaving yellow stains

And emotional/mental ones:
Thinking I see things out of the corners of my eyes (and sometimes more directly, which is so creepy)
Feeling jumpy, anxious, not being able to identify the sources of sounds
(Occasionally) feeling consumed by worry, like everything is terribly wrong and there’s nothing I can do about it
Crying and feeling bad
Difficulty reasoning and thinking about things, feeling confused and not knowing what I want, being unable to make up my mind about things
Difficulty remembering words for things, confusing words with similar words, difficulty putting my thoughts into words
Being conscious while asleep but being unable to wake up or move
Waking up feeling as if I didn’t really get any sleep
Having incessant things going around in my head when awake, usually music or a random phrase (like a broken record), and a few times feeling as if I were having a dream while I was awake

I experienced many of these same symptoms, though usually to a lesser degree, when I was on the asthma medicines. The only symptom from the drugs (which I’m now assuming was bromide-related) which I’ve not gotten from the detoxing, is I used to get bad migraines, which so far I thankfully seem to be avoiding.

I’m managing most of these symptoms pretty well, but the one I’m having a very hard time dealing with is trouble swallowing. There’s nothing blocking my throat and it’s not swollen, but it feels as if I intend to swallow and then – I don’t. The muscles just don’t respond, and I end up aspirating what I was trying to swallow. For about the first month this was fine, I just choked a little when I ate and had to pay attention when I swallowed, but since then it’s gotten increasingly worse and I’ve been forced onto an increasingly liquid diet for the last 2 months. Now even if the liquid is at all gummy or not completely smooth I can’t swallow it – I used to drink blended drinks but even that’s beyond my abilities now, and I’m on strictly juice. I’ve gotten liquid or powder forms of the companion vitamins and minerals, but obviously my nutrition must be suffering from the liquid diet, as much as I’ve been trying to keep it sustainable. The only thing that I’ve found that seems to help with the dysphagia is really scrubbing down my skin in the bath with purified water until I’m completely exfoliated, and even then the improvement is only slight and only lasts for about 24 hours.

Before starting the detox (and during the beginning) I was eating an all-organic, very nutrient-dense high-protein high-fat diet and feeling very good on it. I’d also been eating and drinking a wide variety of probiotic foods for about a year and a half, and my digestion was pretty unremarkable. I’d love to be able to go back to that, and I imagine it would make the detoxing a lot easier to be able to eat actual food again.

I’ve also read that dysphagia can be a sign of hypothyroidism, but I can’t find whether this is mechanical (goiter making it difficult to swallow) or a sort of paralysis like I’m experiencing. My swallowing does seem to get worse when I try to postpone taking the iodine, but then it also gets worse concomitant with the bromide symptoms getting worse.

Support for bromide detox that I’ve read about (which I’m doing, as much as possible):
Salt loading
Pulse-dosing
Companion supplements
Good nutrition
Drinking more water and eating more food
Taking iodine and selenium simultaneously
Oil pulling
Avoiding halides and other toxins in the environment
Detoxing the pathways (colon, kidneys, liver)
Clearing the lymph system
Taking probiotics
Avoiding goitrogens
Eating coconut oil

I could really use some advice. Am I doing something incredibly wrong and/or stupid? Is there anything else I can be doing to make the detox easier?

Is there any help for this? Would it be safe to take more iodine? And if I did, how quickly could I ratchet it up? What would I do if the detox symptoms got worse?

I’ve been doing as much reading as possible about halide detoxing, but it’s difficult while simultaneously dealing with the actual detox. I wish I’d had a fairer idea of what I was getting myself into before I stumbled into it (and I would have done some heavy-duty colon, kidney, and liver detoxes beforehand if I’d known!), but now I feel almost locked into this since I can’t go very long without iodine. I’d prefer to just detox better, but if I can’t is there a way to go off of iodine for awhile, or to take iodine without having it mobilize bromide so much?
