These stories don't tell the whole truth. Iodine MUST be taken with the required co-supplements or there will be thyroid problems. The critical co-supplement is selenium.

Dr. Brownstein makes specific recommendations to avoid problems when taking iodine.

Notice he specifies selenomethionine.

Also those who are hypothyroid should start selenium first to avoid the potential of Hashimotos. Details here:
