Pin Worms

Pin Worms...my family had them. After reading a number of the entries on this site, I would not be foolish enough to claim that we were worst case scenario. However, my wife and I did a lot of research on the subject, went thru painstaking routines for 3-4 weeks and I am happy to say that "knock on wood", 6 weeks and counting, no reoccurrence.

Mental Health - Let me start by suggesting that your mental health thru this process is very important. It will play a major role in your ability to cope with the crisis. For example, my wife spent a lot of time reading the horror stories on the internet. That is not to discount how bad certain cases can be, please no offense intended, but in general, when reading things on the internet, one must take into account that, first...the worse the case is, the more apt someone is willing to take the time to write the story, and second, the article doesn't always go into enough detail to explain the environment and the commitment to eradication. My point is not to discredit in any way the worst case scenarios and the struggles associated with them, my point is simply that there is motivation behind worst case scenarios therefore it is best to keep this in mind when reading. If you don't stop to realize that for every worst case scenario that is posted, there are probably hundreds or thousands of cases that are not documented because they never reached that point of crisis. If you don't believe me, ask your doctor about how common this problem is and compare that to the number of posts on the subject. Buying into the worst case scenarios out of the gate will only hinder your chances of getting thru this whereas hope may provide that extra motivation to see it through.

Early Detection - Medically speaking, early detection is key. My 8 yr old son complained of an itchy backside for 4-5 days before we saw 'The Worms'. We immediately called the doctor and he prescribed two tablets of Albenza at $106 per pill. Over the course of the next 3 days, we must have captured 45-70 worms exiting the anus before a later stool expelled hundreds of dead ones. Within a week of first detection, my wife also had them. She was dosed with Albenza and as a precaution, I dosed along with my 4 yr old daughter. My daughter and I never actually developed any symptoms. My wife and son redosed 3 weeks later as a precaution. That's right...a total of $1242 in meds.

The Environment - Given that my wife suffers from a weakened immune system due to Lupus, she is just shy of having a phobia with germs. This said, she is always cleaning surfaces and changing towels in our 2000 sq/ft suburban home. Our home is not immaculate but well kept.

The Work - My wife and I spent hours a day in precautionary measures. We cancelled all public and family engagements to contain the parasite. When we did go out for necessities, work, and other things, we were very careful. Even though I never showed any symptoms, my mind tricked me into thinking I was itching for weeks. Since my wife had them, she thought she itched as well. Checking each other in the dark with flashlights on a regular basis was not fun to say the least not to mention the interruption of sleep. Anyway, here are a few steps we took for 3 weeks: Changed and washed bed linens, bleached all hard surface floors, and sanitized surfaces. I also purchased a large area UV Wand that emits UV-A, B, & C light. Without getting technical, my research determined that exposure under such light should kill eggs. I can't attest to its' effectiveness but for $150 + shipping, it gave us some peace of mind and saved us a lot of time in the sanitizing process. I have to believe based on the fact we appear to be on the winning side of this crisis, that at the least, it had some affect. Early on, we quarantined several rooms until be got a handle on the others. Another step we took was placing a throw away plastic bag in each bathroom. Each person was instructed to change cloths there whereas all undergarments were taken off slowing and placed in the bag; we then washed these garments on a daily basis. I would then use the UV Wand to go over the bathroom floors, toilets, and surfaces on a daily basis. I also used the wand later in the game on all bed linen surfaces on a daily basis.

Contact - I have developed some theories on how this critter works. Though I have no idea where my son got it from, I have a pretty good idea of how my wife got them. She probably came in contact with eggs in the process of doing my sons laundry. Given her lowered immune system, she is pretty anal about washing her hands but she admitted to not washing her hands after placing laundry in the washer. Odds are that everyone in our family came in contact with an egg or more but fortunately by daughter didn't appear to ingest any. Given that I also handle my sons laundry and I don't wash my hands as frequently (except under more normal circumstances), added to the fact that I dealt with a lot of the suspected infected areas (playroom, etc), I wonder why I didn't show any symptoms??? Either I just got lucky or there is something more. There are few articles on the subject but I am a tobacco user (not a smoker). I do not condone the vice and habit (it is a nasty one) but I have read that worms do not thrive in such environments.

Conclusion - I hope this is in fact, the conclusion ... knock on wood! I hope that whoever reads this gets some tips that help your situation. If nothing else, my hope is that I have given you some hope. Such an experience can be a mental and physical drain. I do feel for those of you that have it worse than I; I can only imagine. Only through strength of mind and perseverance do you stack the odds in your favor. Don't skimp on the methods and stick to your plan no matter what that plan is.
