Re: John MacArthur Fails in Interview

"The Calvinism debate is a hard one."

I really respect that statement Rainy! I've longed to hear that statement from a non-calvinist for many years. So many people act like it's insane to believe the way calvinism defines predestination, etc. But I don't see how anyone can honestly say that Romans 9 especially, but so many other passages, do not at least sound like what is stated in calvinism. It's one thing to say I just don't believe what is stated in calvinism is true, I think the Bible is saying something different, but to act like calvinism is just something some heretic pulled out of nowhere with no scriptural support whatsoever, which surprisingly many act like, boggles me.
And I will say it back, I think the calvinism/arminian debate is hard too. I think arminians can make a good case scripturally for their side. I still of course don't think the arminian side is true, but nevertheless they can make a good sounding case.
I honestly don't think any of the debates are easy. I think the Cessationism vs. Continuationism debate is hard, and I think the annihilism vs. traditional view of hell is hard, and all the debates about post, pre, and whatever else millenniums is hard, and the Lordship salvation vs. free grace debate is hard, etc.
My dad and I have often talked about how we don't think God made all this clear as day for a reason. Couldn't he have made it so super clear that there could never be a debate on any of this? I think one possible reason why God made the scriptures more difficult is so we would depend on him all the more for understanding. If it was all super easy, wouldn't we be less inclined to go to the Lord and say, Help Me understand all this! If it was all so easy, would we be less inclined to be humbled through this process of growing in grace and truth? Just some thoughts I've had and maybe someone has a better answer.
I guess in that way, although I don't think John MacArthur gave the best sounding answer for that question he was asked either, I appreciated him saying I don't understand it all. Because I sure don't either.
And on debating calvinism, I'll be honest, I really don't want to get into it all either. This is a debate that has gone on for centuries, and so anyone that is interested in it, can pull up countless articles, videos, etc. Really with all the debates, we can do that. And I know people always respect when someone writes their own words with these debates, etc., but I just don't have time to do that. I know you don't either.
