Preventing a cap

I visited the dentist yesterday, and he wants to put a cap on my first molar. It has not been bothering me. Nothing major was showing on the xray, but he says he saw some decay between the teeth. He also says the filling there is already large, so it would be best to do a cap. I am very hesitant to have a cap put on. I am only 30 years old. I generally have a very healthy mouth, but this specific tooth has been an issue since my early teens. Will oil pulling and changing my diet heal this tooth? Am I stuck getting a cap? I worry about the life of this tooth if I get a cap. Can you heal teeth that already have fillings?
