Can one remove amalgam without filling them back?

I was wondering if anybody has removed their Amalgam and left the teeth the way they are without filling them up right away with alternative material? I know this is a strange thing to ask, but it just came across my mind because looking at all the mercury-free options, I found downsides to all except gold, which is extremely expensive to replace.

I want to get rid of my Amalgam fillings as soon as possible but I don't have the money to replace with gold. What if I just take them out and fill them back gradually with time? My Amalgam fillings are very old, like 20 years, and I've never had additional cavity since I had them so I do not worry about exposing the cavity. However, I don't know if there will be issues for nerves, etc. Some fillings are quite large and deep so that would be a problem as well.

Just wondering if anybody has considered this or even attempted at it and what the consequences were. Thanks!
