Actually, gold isn't a better conductor than copper. It is about 50% worse. Silver and copper are only about 10% different, but it is a much bigger step down to gold. OTOH, gold normally doesn't corrode or oxidize, and is a better conductor than nickel, so it is a good plating material for electrical contacts that are in a nasty environment.
