Allergies are connected to the immune system. Yes, it could be allergies in many cases. Whether it be food allergies , chemical allergies, fungus allergies. In the hygiene hypothesis, instead of immune system sending one signal to fire, it sends too many signals...something to do with Th1 and Th2. But, some bacteria infections produce exfoliative toxins that makes the skin exfoliate.
