Re: New AF Resource

Cortisol
Cortisol is an anti-inflammatory emergency hormone
produced in order to reduce inflammation and to suppress the
immune system.
Chronic stress leads to high levels of cortisol, which begins
the catabolism of muscle tissue in order to manufacture glucose
out of amino acids in the liver in a process called
gluconeogenesis.
Muscles contain large amounts of tryptophan, and when
released into the blood in the presence of fatty acids (low CO2,
high lactic acid), tryptophan is likely to become serotonin.43
Liberated unsaturated fats add insult to injury by intensifying
the excitotoxic properties of estrogen and increasing serotonin
uptake in the brain.45
Increased amounts of serotonin and estrogen leads to
uncontrolled production of cortisol.44
Cortisol is strongly associated with premature hair loss and
was found to be “significantly elevated in androgenic
alopecians, both male and female,” when compared with
controls.4
Elevated stress hormones combined with poor nutrition
has long been known to precipitate telogen effluvium, a
condition that causes rapid hair loss.46
