I'm not sure where you live but I just went to the local hardware store (Home Depot or maybe it was Lowe's - not sure). They had a water kit that tested for metals and nitrates (among other things). So I used that to test my water. I don't know how well those things really work but... It made me feel better about it.

I also bought a water filter from Home Depot or Lowe's but ended up returning it when I realized it didn't fit my shower. Sorry - not much help with that.

Your location health department may test your water for you.
