Cardinal Roger Mahony will still help to elect a new pope, although he was barred from performing any public duties in his Los Angeles archdiocese by the current archbishop because of his handling of multiple sex abuse cases involving pedophile clergy.
Mahony was recently rebuked for his failure to do enough to stop the sexua| abuse of children by priests under his watch when he led the Los Angeles Archdiocese, but apparently he still remains in good standing as archbishop emeritus.
According to the Huffington Post, Mahony said he is looking forward to traveling to Rome to participate in the secret conclave that will elect the next pope.
Mahony tweeted, “Historical news with the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI. Am planning to be in Rome and vote for the next Pope. Will be tweeing (sic) daily.”
