According to Chris Kresser, very little of DHA and EPA are absorbed by our body.

Less than 5% of Alpha Linoleic Acid (flax, walnuts) converts into EPA
Less than 0.5% of Alpha Linoleic Acid (flax, walnuts) converts into DHA

Therefore, the best source of omega 3's, for humans, is with animal products.
