The "C" Word - Cancer

Cancer is a disease process inwhich healthy cells stop functioning and maturing properly. A mishap occurs inside these cells. Perhaps it begins with a change (mutation) in the genetic blueprint, its DNA. The altered DNA makes copies of itself and passes its information and gene sequencing on to other cells which then become cancer prone. As the normal cycle of cell creation and death is interrupted, the newly mutated cancer cells begin multiplying uncontrollably, no longer operating as an integrated and harmonious part of the body.

We know the many dangers of cigarette smoking, What we may not know is that 36 percent of all cancers are directly related toour diet, and some researchers maintain that environmental factors, including diet, are at the root of over 81 percent of all cancer cases.

Cancer is a complex disease that can have many different causes. There many types of cancer, and we still have a lot to learn. Cancer researchers believe that diet rich in antioxidant nutrients could significantly reduce our risk of cancer by reducing our risk of cell damage from free radicals.

There is considerable evidence that antioxidants, by protecting against free radical-related tumor promotion, can help inhibit some forms of cancer from developing, as well as bolster the immune system. One of the key insights is that the immune system itself, in mounting its response against cancer cells, toxins, and microbes can produce highly potent and potentially harmful substances such as cytokines and oxidant molecules. Antioxidants are required in sufficient supply to protect the body against these "side effects" of the immune response.

The glutathione and other antioxidant enzymes made by our body neutralize free radicals from environmental poisons and from normal metabolism. Glutathione also captures toxins and heavy metals and removes them from our body. Vitamin A, C, and E function as important antioxidants as do many other natural substances found in a healthy Diet in rich in fresh organic fruits and vegetables.

Study after study has shown that high levels of antioxidant vitamins and enzymes are essential for protecting you against the environmental toxins that surround us every day and for handling the free radicals we normally produce. Low blood levels of antioxidants or vitamins are a clear risk factor for cancer, especially cancer of the lung, esophagus, cervix, and breast.

High levels of antioxidants and vitamins have been shown to protect against many kinds of cancer, including melanoma (skin cancer), lung cancer, colon cancer, and bladder cancer.

When a cell in our body becomes cancerous, our body deploys its natural defenses to remove the marauder. In most people, most of the time, the occasional cancerous cell is dealt with very effectively by the immune system. If our antioxidant and vitamin levels are high, our immune system will function optimally and destroy the renegade cells quickly. If our immune and vitamin levels is compromised (i.e HIV or AIDS), or if our antioxidant and vitamin levels are inadequate due to low intake or poor absorption, cancerous cells may escape detection and destruction. They may then grow rapidly, forming a tumor that eventually can develop its own blood supply and affect our body's funtion.

By simply taking supplements our cancer risk can be reduced. But they are not magical - There re no guaranteees. If one takes lots of extra vitamins and antioxidants and continues to smoke, for example one is still at high risk for cancer, emphysema and heart disease. The best approach is to combine antioxidant supplements with other steps for maximum cancer protection.
