We are all here on this planet doing either good things or bad things to ourselves and others. Through these events and their consequences, we learn something. If we don't, then we get to repeat it until we do learn. God is neutral, allowing us to experiment. Being told what is right and wrong does not necessarily work -- learning by doing makes the lesson stick! We create our own miseries here as a result of something that we have done or have not done but should have. Once an individual perceives his world in a different light -- by not attaching great emotion to events -- then his world is more comfortable.
I had read once that eons ago, when our souls were sent to observe and care for planet Earth, some souls were quite curious about the birds and animals and wanted to partake of their experience, so we now have the stories of half man - half horse (centaurs), various birds with both human and bird features. Then God started over and we HAD to partake of the earthly experience and we are working our way back out of it.
No matter what stories are out there, we create our own existence here. We must learn to love ourselves (which is the toughest thing to do), send love to others -- since we are all a spark of God, we are very similar beneath our earthly costumes -- and we must remember not to condemn others who are trying to stagger through their own lives. A kind word, a helping hand will change both your day and someone else's.
God is watching, not interfering. He loves us just for existing and wants us to bring Home our experiences to Him.
