Re: Magnesium Oxide
The concept that better absorption means a better supplement is salesman'hype for "buy my more expensive product. Magnesium is "poorly absorbed" for a reason. No magnesium salt is well absorbed because the body goes to a great deal of effort to control magnesium levels in the blood. When you take a "well absorbed" magnesium supplement, blood levels go up and, just as rapidly, urine levels go up as the excess magnesium is spilled through the kidneys.
The most important thing about taking supplemental magnesium is remembering to take it every day.
The second most important thing is the anion, what is the magnesium attached to.
Chloride is bad because our diet is willed with it (water).
Acetate is ok but difficult to find.
Chelates are expensive and are mostly amino acid supplement that can produce untoward effects. If you want malic acid, or glycine or orotic acid take it separately. cheaper and better.
Citrate is BAD. While citrate is raising the absorption of magnesium, it is also increasing the adsorption of cadmium, aluminum and lead.
Oxide has been used for thousands of years and hundreds of studies show that it is absorbed from a normal digestive tract. If you are achlorhydric (lacking digetive acid), look for gluconate or lactate on the internet.
