Thanks for your reply Mike.

While it is a modern root canal I have a couple of concerns. Chiefly that since my immune system is so squashed by whatever problems I'm having that my root canal could still be leaking microscopic tiny tiny nastiness into my body making it impossible to heal. Secondly, and I don't think I brought this up on the forum before, after having the initial crown placed it felt very uncomfortable to me. I was constantly rubbing my tongue against the back of it. I made an appointment and had my dentist shave the top of it down a bit. Now what I'm thinking is that too much was shaved away from the seal of it and bacteria has been allowed more freedom getting out of the affected area. I am no doctor but these are just the theories of a young man struggling to find the reasons for his ill health.
